Happy Holidays!

We're kicking off the holiday season today with a sing-a-long with the whole school! They practiced songs to go along with the book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. What a wonderful way to start off the day hearing our student's beautiful voices. Happy Holidays and have a wonderful New Years!

Science Soil Activity

On Monday, we got our hands a little dirty when we tried to figure out what soil is made of. We discussed how three soil types had different properties and which ones absorbed the most water. We'll be learning more about soil throughout the week.

Be a Champ!

Isaac and Champ are seeing eye dogs who came to CIS to show us how we can be helpful to people who are blind. They are very hard workers and when they are working, we need to leave them alone. Thanks to the Chadron State College Social Work students for giving us such very important information.

Finished Fossils

They turned out great!

Making Fossils on Friday

We were making molds and casts today in class. We used modeling clay for the mold.We used plaster of Paris for the cast.We used petroleum jelly to cover the seashells so they would not stick. It was a lot of fun.

Glue Art Self Portraits

We often hold onto the students' art work to save for the fair and parents don't get to see it. So here are our self portraits that we made using glue and pastels. We thought they turned out pretty well!

Petrified Wood

This rock was my uncle's. It is a piece of wood that has been petrified. Petrified means to turn into rock.

We Voted!

We voted!  In Mr. Horst's class today, fourth graders were given the chance to vote for their candidate.  They may not be old enough to vote in the real election, but they have their stickers to prove that they got to take part in the process this year.

Proof of the vote.

More proof of the vote.

Reading Scholastic News.

Watching the news.

CNN Student News, with Carl Azuz.

One of our favorite parts of the week is watching the news and reading news materials.  We can find out what is going on in the world from our corner of the world from our own classroom.  Ask the students what they've been learning this week about Hurricane Sandy.  It might not have hit our state, but they know it will still have an impact on them in other ways.  Also, with the election coming up, our news sources are giving us lots of information about the candidates.  Talk to your kids about it at home to see what they've learned and to open up the conversation about the importance of the voting process.  Watching the news together is a fun way to start those conversations!

Well, here is my first post!  We are having a great year so far at CIS.  Today we got to celebrate our students.  They did a great job on their testing last year and got to celebrate their success today by getting fudgesicles.  We're working hard to encourage our students to strive for excellence Hope everyone has a great weekend!  (Photo by Mrs. Nancy Anderson)
